“texto en linea”

The activity has been designed to be carried out by an advanced group of 6th grade learners in primary school.

- First, I explained what the project was about. Although I'm not really keen on working with translations at this stage, I wanted them to cope with the fact that every language has its own personality and that it's a huge mistake trying to translate word by word only by the means of internet translator and all that stuff. I tried them to realize the importance of using English as a language itself, with its own rules and personality, though they have to take Spanish texts and turned into English with their own tools and the help of the teacher.

- Second, they were given the option of working by groups or individually and were also free to choose the topic they wanted.

- They had to find in internet ten items about the topic they pick and find a short text in Spanish about them.

- Afterwards, I adapted the Spanish texts to the level of the students in order to be translated.

- Then, they had to take the Spanish texts and translate into English working with present and past tenses but giving a personal approach, just using translator tools for single words and the help of the teacher in difficult cases.

- Then, when they finished translating, they had to take the original text in Spanish and set into a translator tool to fully conversion and realize the differences between their pieces of text and the ones made by the translator.

- Finally, they were asked to design and to make the timeline with the timetoast app.

- I provided with a complete explanation of the website and they made their timeline out of the class at their own pace within a time limit.

- They showed me their projects and I gave some little advices to improve them.

- Some problems came up along the project. Although all of the students in the project had a high level in English, they all had the intuition of translating word by word. So, the first point here were to make them realize about the need of understanding the English without the bridge of the Spanish. So, when they all had the texts to work with, I asked them to get the general meaning of them. Once achieved, they had to write the English text without translating word by word but the meaning of sentences.

- Once they had translated all the texts, they compared their versions with the ones in the online translator and realized the mistakes made by the tool.

- The timetoast app has revealed itself as a powerful tool to make highly visual presentations. It orders facts by time and can also provide visual help to display the project and make it more attractive. Students are used to work with different types of apps, so there were no difficulties when working with it.

- The objectives of the task were mainly the use of writing production. Coping with different types of tenses and vocabulary. Furthermore, they were encouraged to make a visual explanation, using the oral language and the visual help of timetoast and the digital board.
